Why should you buy an Electric Scooter or a Kumpan Scooter?
-
The exterior design of a Kumpan electric scooter is not so different from a conventional petrol-driven scooter. All user parts and surfaces (handlebars, brake levers, accelerator cable, throttle grip etc) are found in the usual places, but with the new powerful and direct pulling action of the electric motor and cruise control supplements, this is where it beats the conventional elements of control.
You’ll notice a real difference inside the scooter with a modern upgraded engine; no comparison to the combustion engine scooter. This is due to the elimination of classic components such as the variomatic transmission as well as the exhaust and tank, resulting in a newly designed frame construction, allowing more space under the seat for up to three batteries. These removable lithium-ion batteries can be recharged at any standard household socket and can be removed from their slot (under the seat) or with models other than the model ’54i:nspire’. They can be charged directly in the vehicle by plugging the charging cable into the slot (at the front of the scooter). One power pack has a lifetime of up to 1000 full charge cycles, i.e. up to 45,000 kilometers with one battery; the average scooter rider drives 3,000 kilometers a year.
In addition, the weight distribution is different from a classic scooter, due to the wheel hub motor, batteries and modern electrical components. Finally, the lack of engine noise, built-in electric motor and the completely redesigned interior (controller, batteries) prove that the Kumpan electric scooter is designed for an environmentally-friendly drive.
-
There are several advantages to riding a Kumpan scooter:
Enjoy mobility without emissions and drive more economically, costing around € 0.99 per 100 kilometers in electricity (as of 2014). In comparison, a conventional petrol scooter costs around ten times more to travel the exact same distance. Electricity can also be generated by your own photovoltaic system and used for your mate.
Another advantage is the reduced maintenance needed with repair work and added costs, resulting in saving money on tires and brake pads.
Connect with the environment around you: The quiet electric motor allows you to be more conscious in traffic. It also helps to reduce city noise and negative attention – mostly the case with loud mopeds. If you need to draw attention to yourself, use the loud horn!
-
The Kumpan 54i series and all subsequent models are designed, developed and manufactured in Remagen, Germany.
What happens after ordering?
-
After ordering you will receive an order confirmation from us. Your scooter will then be produced according to your wishes, prepared for shipping and sent to your home with a shipping partner. You will receive a confirmation of dispatch, including a tracking link from us, so that you know exactly when your Kumpan will arrive at your home. The dispatch takes about 2-3 working days. An important note: Please don’t be surprised if your scooter order is declared as “dangerous goods transport” – due to the fact that the scooters contain batteries that are considered dangerous goods, special safety measures are necessary.
Which scooter can I drive?
-
Aged 15+: You can drive a Kumpan electric scooter up to 25 km / h, along with a moped certificate. Since 1 January 2020 the new regulation states that 45 km / h models can also be driven.
Aged 16+: You can either get a scooter or moped (up to 45 km / h) or a light motorcycle driving license (up to 80 km / h).
Aged 18+: Holders of a car driving license can drive Kumpan electric scooters from 25 km / h or up to 45 km / h. For the 100 km / h version, a motorcycle driving license or a car driving license issued before 1 April 1980 is a necessary must!
Since 1 January 2020, the new regulation also applies here. This regulation allows holders of a car driving license to drive a light motorcycle of up to a maximum of 125 ccm or 100 km / h without an additional driving test with the following requirements:
Aged 25+ and have held your driver’s license for around five years. You would also need to have completed at least nine driving school units of 90 minutes each, five of which have to be practical and four theory lessons.

How was the scooter approved?
-
The approval depends on the class of your e-scooter. If you drive a model 54i:nspire or 54i:conic, please contact your trusted insurer with your COC document, which you will receive from us. Your electric scooter will get an annual number plate, valid from March 1st of the year until the last day of February of the same year. If you apply for the licence plate later in the year, it will be valid for a shorter period. After its expiry, it must be applied again.
If you want to start driving immediately after you receive your scooter, it is also possible that we deliver your Kumpan with the insurance number plate already included. Thanks to the cooperation with Zurich Insurance, your scooter now is ready to go – just let us know. You have the possibility of a normal liability insurance or an optional comprehensive cover.
If you have chosen one of our sports models above 45 km/h, the models 54i:mpulse or 54i:gnite, you will need an official insurance number plate. To do this, you must register your scooter with your local road traffic office using the documents we provide and you will then be issued with a registration number plate. You also have the possibility to insure your scooter through our partner Zurich Versicherung.

Questions regarding the functions of a Kumpan Electric Scooter
-
A Kumpan electric scooter has three main technical components: the accumulator (including the battery management system), the controller and the wheel hub motor.
The accumulator serves as energy storage and transmits the energy to the motor. The controller is mostly used for speed control and current limitation; it is therefore the switching mechanism between the accumulator and the motor. The brushless wheel hub motor is built directly into the rear wheel so that the power is generated wherever needed. This means that there are only a few mechanical friction losses compared to a petrol-driven scooter.
By eliminating the V-belts and chains, the engine power can be transferred directly to the wheel. The brushless electric motor also makes the drive technology durable and maintenance-free.
-
With the integrated smart technology in the 54i series, the scooter can be started via the ‘Kumpan key app’. The app can be downloaded from any app store of your choice.
In addition, the scooter can also be started by pressing a button when the key is nearby.
-
Our 54i family has completely new lighting modules. While the model 54i:nspire is equipped with a greatly improved LED lighting system as standard, the model 54i:conic is equipped with high-quality LEDs, which enormously increase the ability to see and be seen even at night. This LED kit can also be retrofitted to the Kumpan 54i:nspire. For this, we charge 120,- €.
-
There can be several reasons why your Kumpan won’t start. Some of them you can solve yourself immediately. Here is a first overview:
-
- Battery sockets are not covered: Use the covers (bridging plugs) to cover all battery sockets that are not occupied by a battery.
- Front charging hatch is open: Close the front charging hatch with a light pressure until it clicks into place.
- Side stand is not fully folded: Fold in the side stand.
- Killswitch is activated: Flip the Killswitch-switch.
- Battery is not properly engaged: Lift your power pack completely out of the scooter again and reinsert it into the battery compartment. Make sure that the handle of the battery is pressed down completely and locked in place. Now your battery is locked and securely connected to your electric scooter.
- Your battery shows the error code E114: There is a recognition problem between your electric scooter and the battery. Lift your battery once and reconnect it to the Kumpan. If this does not solve the problem, your scooter will unfortunately have to be taken to a service partner who can solve the software problems.
- Your battery shows the error code E142: Your power pack is empty. Recharge it first so that you can continue your journey.
- Your battery shows the error code E155: Your battery is too cold (this error can occur due to low temperatures below -5°C). Take your power pack inside so that it can warm up a little.
- Your battery shows the error code E166: The core temperature of your battery is too hot. Give your power pack a few minutes to cool down.
- Display does not turn on, start button lights up briefly: Your Kumpan has no connection to the radio key. Pick up the key one by one and try to start your Kumpan again. If this does not help, the radio signal may be disturbed by the surroundings. To do this, push the scooter a few metres further (for example out of the garage) to allow an undisturbed radio connectio
It is also possible that the key battery is empty. Simply insert a new CR2032 battery (button cell) with 3 volts. You can get this in any well-stocked supermarket.
-
- Display does not turn on, start button lights up briefly: Your Kumpan is not connected to your smartphone with the Kumpan Key app: First check if the Bluetooth on your mobile is on and the Kumpan Key app is active. Open the app again to avoid that it only runs in the background. However, there is also the possibility that your mobile phone has not been trained properly. Go to the menu of your e-scooter and click on “Key”, then on “Remove”. You will be shown a list of all keys that have been trained for your scooter. If your smartphone does not appear in this list, please start the learning process again.
- The start button will light up permanently, but the display will not turn on: Press and hold the start button for about 15 seconds and then switch your Kumpan on again. If this does not help, please contact our customer service. If this problem occurs frequently, you should have a software update made by your service partner.
- Neither the display nor the start button lights up: Your internally installed back-up battery is empty: This can happen if the scooter has been parked for a long time without the power pack inserted. For vehicles without a mechanical lock (all models older than the 54i series), the seat must be opened by the service partner with an emergency cable. However, from the 54i series onwards there is a mechanical lock in the glove compartment which can be used to open the seat in order to use the full power pack. This recharges your backup battery. This also applies if the backup battery is empty because the scooter was parked with a (nearly) empty drive battery. If the vehicle does not have a mechanical lock in this case, connect your Kumpan to the charger via the front charging socket to charge all the batteries.
If this does not solve the problem, please contact either your service partner or us directly at +49 (0) 2642 999 800.

Questions regarding charging & battery life
-
Wherever you can find a standard household socket – thanks to our portable power pack ‘to-go’, you now have more flexibility to charge your Kumpan with less limitations. This is the case for both power pack 1.5 and power pack 2.0: Either take the battery out of the slot (under the seat) and charge it separately at the socket.
With models other than the Kumpan ’54i:nspire’, use the slot at the front of the scooter and charge the batteries while they are still under your seat.
-
The built-in rechargeable cells of your Kumpan power pack now have a lifespan of up to 1000 full charge cycles. For example, if you cover a range of 45 kilometers with one battery (check out ‘How far can I drive with the Kumpan?’), This corresponds to a total mileage of 45,000 kilometers (45 kilometers x 1000 full charge cycles).
Incidentally, the average scooter driver covers 3,000 kilometers per year. Your battery is subjected to a chemical aging process, the service life of which depends heavily on the charging behaviour. We recommend that you recharge it regularly, not only when it’s below 10%. In the best case the battery will have a charge of between 20 and 80%: this way it will have the longest life.
-
During vehicle use, the power pack is protected by a ‘Battery Management System’ which automatically switches off due to a protective mechanism. Therefore, it’s impossible to overload while driving. Please note, for a long battery life this condition should be avoided if possible.
In addition, the monitoring and protective systems built in to the battery, along with the telematics will consume more energy. It’s important to ensure the battery is fully charged regularly and not left with a low capacity for long periods of time, even when not in use. Please also store at room temperature.
‘The earlier the power pack is connected to the socket, the better it is for its lifespan’.
Although the self-discharge of lithium cells is very low, we still recommend a charge check once a month.
-
You can remove the batteries from your E-Scooter and charge them using a charging cable or optionally, leave the batteries in their compartments (under the seat).
By using the built-in socket, you have an advantage to charge the batteries in the scooter at the same time – you can connect a charging cable to the front of the scooter. Each battery needs around 4-5 hours to be fully charged with no need to connect them one after the other to the charger. Please note, this function is not available on the Kumpan ’54i:nspire ‘.
However, should an external power socket not be available, the charging cable and the wireless removable battery is your trump card! You can recharge your batteries at any standard household socket – at home or on the go!
-
You can lock any battery connected to your Kumpan by pressing and briefly holding the battery icon at the bottom of the touch display for around two seconds; a small lock will appear on the battery. This way the energy your mate needs is only drawn from the remaining batteries. If your remaining range with these remaining batteries drops below 5 km, the locked battery will automatically be reactivated.
-
Due to a chemical process, the ions contained in our batteries cool down after they’ve been powering the ride for a long duration. They are then distributed more evenly in the battery again, which changes the charge indicator.
-
Yes, you receive a guarantee from us on our ‘Power packs 2.0’.
For a new battery, it’s a two-year warranty, for a used battery, one-year warranty.
-
Before the winter period, charge your battery once to around 60% – 70%. Store it at room temperature and make sure the battery level doesn’t drop below 10%.
We recommend a monthly checkup for this.
Then simply recharge the battery to approximately 60% – 70% so that it can survive the winter period without any problems.
-
A battery should ideally be charged between 20% and 80% to use at its full capacity. Regular recharging and correct storage together, ensures the longest possible shelf life.
-
The electrical output of a “Power Pack 2.0” equals 4 kW, the nominal capacity is 28.5 Ah (1.479kWh).
-
No, you should actually avoid that. Basically, the rule is: “The earlier the power pack is plugged in, the better for its service life”. A battery level between 20-80% is optimal. Even if you don’t use your scooter for a long time, it is important to check and if necessary, charge it at least once a month to avoid a deep discharge. You should then place the charged batteries in your Kumpan scooter for a few minutes to avoid discharging the back-up battery.
-
Yes, that is no problem! If, for example, you always charge the battery only 10% at a time, this will still be one single charge cycle until it is fully charged. So it does not harm your “power pack” in any way.
-
Open battery sockets in the battery compartment must always be covered with the bridging plugs provided for this purpose. If at least one of the battery sockets remains uncovered, the scooter is not ready to drive and the error message “Please close battery sockets” appears in the display.
-
If you do not lock one or more of the battery sockets at the bottom of the battery compartment, your e-scooter is not ready to drive. Please cover the battery sockets that you do not need at the moment with a bridging plug (always included in the scope of delivery) so that you can start driving again.
Questions regarding the operation of a Kumpan Electric Scooter
-
The Kumpan has only a few wearing parts such as the braking status, tyre pressure and tyre profile, which will need to be checked on a regular basis – make sure the tyres are always properly inflated.
A tyre pressure of 2.2 bar at the front and 2.6 bar at the rear is optimal and ensures that no loss of range or speed should be expected. To maintain the best condition of your Kumpan, it is recommended that you have frequent inspections carried out by your Kumpan dealer.
-
If the delivery is made by DHL, you will be asked to sign and confirm you’ve accepted hazardous goods, due to the new batteries. Imagine being sent your car by post with a tank full of fuel – the combustion fuel would also be classified as a hazardous material. The same applies to the battery. So don’t worry – everything is as it should be!
Please check the box in which your buddy was delivered is undamaged. Do not accept the package if the carton is damaged. In this case call our headquarters directly at +49 (0) 2642 999 800 or send us an e-mail at: service@ebility.de.
If your box is undamaged, open it. Please make sure the delivery is complete, then mount the mirrors and adjust them to suit your needs. Check the tyre pressure: A tyre pressure of 2.2 bar at the front and 2.6 bar at the back is optimal for your mate. The delivery includes a user manual and a Quickstarter guide. Read these carefully to familiarise yourself with all the features of your Kumpan E-Scooter, before you start using it.
How far can I drive with a Kumpan Electric Scooter?
-
You have a range of up to 186 kilometers, depending on the model (due to different vehicle weights and powers) and the environment, but mostly it’s determined by the number of batteries integrated in a Kumpan; the more batteries activated, the higher the range per battery. If the power demand of a vehicle is distributed over several batteries, this is gentler on the battery instead of a single battery that is under loaded.
Model 1950: 40 kilometers (no longer in production)
Model 1953: 50 to 150 kilometers (no longer in production)
Model 54i:nspire: up to 62 kilometers (average 45km with 1 battery)
Model 54i:conic: up to 186 kilometers with 3 batteries (average 135km with 3 batteries)
Model 54i:mpulse: up to 186 kilometers with 3 batteries (average 100km with 3 batteries)
Model 54i:gnite: up to 186 kilometers with 3 batteries (average 80km with 3 batteries)
Important note
All ranges have been tested in laboratory environments and may vary due to the nature of the road, the weight of the driver, and other factors. The average range gives a realistic figure for the weight of a driver, combined with city & country trips and various speeds. -
The Kumpan 54i model series can be driven in pairs.
Questions about the Kumpan 54i:nspire?
-
The Kumpan 54i:nspire, with a top speed of 45 km/h, is a class L1e vehicle. To drive this vehicle class, you need one of the following driving licences within the EU: B, A1, A, AM, BF17.
-
For our entry-level model, we have opted for powerful LED headlights that illuminate your path safely and reliably even at night. However, you also have the option of upgrading your lighting and equipping your Kumpan 54i:nspire with HiPower LED spotlights. This is subject to a surcharge of 120€ for new purchases.
-
The model 54i:conic is our “flagship” model, i.e. the classic Kumpan electric scooter in its original form. The model 54i:nspire is our cheapest model, accordingly it is reduced by a few features. You will find the biggest difference in the battery compartment: while both models can hold 3 batteries, the Kumpan 54i:nspire only has a connector in one of the three battery slots. This means that only one battery is connected to your Kumpan at a time – you carry more batteries “blindly”. If the first battery is empty, you can manually insert a second battery into the front battery slot – there is space for three batteries, just like the model 54i:conic. The second big difference: unlike the model 54i:conic, you cannot charge the model 54i:nspire via a front charging socket, but only via the batteries and the charger which is supplied with it. Furthermore, the Kumpan 54i:nspire with 3 kW has slightly less engine power than the Kumpan 54i:conic with 4 kW. Furthermore, our model 54i:nspire does not have the lighting elements in the storage compartments that you will find in the model 54i:conic. Although you can retrofit a bag hook to the model 54i:nspire, you will only find a bag hook as standard on the model 54i:conic. LED lighting is also available as standard on the models 54i:conic and 54i:nspire. The model 54i:conic offers you the option of choosing between four different driving modes (Eco, Comfort, Rain and Sport), while our model 54i:nspire only offers three of them (Eco, Rain and Sport).
-
With the model 54i:nspire, you can only connect one battery at a time. Experience shows that you can realistically cover about 45 km with one battery. However, the range is always dependent on the rider’s weight (payload), weather conditions, ground, gradient and other factors. Under ideal test conditions (according to test standard ECE 134/2014) our battery has a range of 62 km.
You can carry a total of 3 batteries in the model 54i:nspire, but only one of these is connected to the scooter at one time and thus supplies energy. If this battery is empty, you simply change the arrangement of the batteries and off you go. With a little practice, this will take no longer than 20 seconds. -
Here you must know that we produce “on demand”, which means that when your order of a scooter comes in, it will be produced manually according to your individual wishes (colours/equipment). The maximum waiting time is currently 8 weeks. In some cases we may be able to deliver your scooter earlier – in which case we will of course let you know immediately!
-
With our electric scooter, you first have the option of choosing between the different paint, legroom and seat colours. As extras you can choose between an aluminium bag hook, HiPowerLED headlights for even better visibility at night, a top case for even more storage space and a windscreen that protects you from wind and a little rain. You also have the option of ordering additional power packs (batteries). Other chargers and spare keys are also available.
-
The standard colour combination for our 54i series is white lacquer, a black seat and a black legroom. This combination is free of charge for you. If you deviate from this, we will charge you a small surcharge. You have the choice between “Baccara Black”, “Magnolia White”, “Accent Yellow”, “Lava Grey” and “Azure Blue”. The bench and the leg room are available in the colours “Granite Black”, “Aurora Red” and “Mahogany Brown”, whereby you can colour the two parts independently of each other. A blue 54 inspire with white seat and red legroom? No problem!
Questions about the Kumpan 54i:conic?
-
The model 54i:conic drives up to 45 km/h and is therefore classified in class L1e. To drive this scooter a normal class B driving licence is sufficient. Alternatively, driving licence classes A1, A, AM, BF17 also entitle you to drive our model 54i:conic.
-
Our Kumpan 54i:conic comes with HiPower LED headlights as standard to give you a good overview even in the dark.
-
You can connect up to 3 batteries at the same time, which then supply energy without you having to change them. Per battery you have a maximum range of 62km (according to test standard ECE 134/2014) and an average range of approx. 45km (depending on weight, gradient, speed, road conditions, driving mode).
-
The Kumpan 54i:conic offers a little more power and technical refinements: for example, it comes with 4 kW engine power instead of 3 kW, as is the case with the model 54i:nspire. If you want illuminated storage space and a bag hook, you will also find these as standard on the model 54i:conic, but not on the model 54i:nspire. In addition, the charging of the two models differs: the model 54i:nspire has room for three batteries, but only one connector. The Kumpan 54i:conic, on the other hand, has three connectors, so there is no need to change the batteries manually. In addition, you can also charge the Kumpan 54i:conic via an external plug at the front of the front charging socket, for example if you have a charging facility in your garage or in front of your house.
-
After placing your order we need a maximum of 8 weeks to produce and deliver your scooter to you – because our scooters are real handicraft and no mass production. But of course we always do our best to make sure that you have your personal Kumpan at your side.
-
If you want to configure your Kumpan 54i:conic according to your own wishes, you can choose not only the colour of the paintwork, seat and legroom, but also all-weather or whitewall tyres. An electric top case to expand the storage space, as well as crash bar and windscreen, can also be easily added. You can also order one or two additional batteries to further increase the range of your Kumpan 54i:conic.
-
The free standard colour of our 54i series is white, with black seat and black legroom. If you like the lacquer “Baccara Black”, “Magnolia White”, “Accent Yellow”, “Lava Grey” or “Azure Blue” better, you pay a little more for these wishes. You can also choose between “Granite Black”, “Aurora Red” and “Mahogany Brown” for the seat and legroom.

“Electric” top case means that you can open your top case electronically via the display without the need for a mechanical key. In principle, it is possible to retrofit an electrical top case however, this has to be done in our production and can be very costly and time-consuming as the corresponding connections have to be laid subsequently.
-
If you’ve previously had an electronic top case mounted on your Kumpan, all the electronic wires you already need are there; it’s easy to connect an electrical top case.
If you haven’t got an electronic top case on your Kumpan, the appropriate cables must be connected by our production team before you can use it.
Please send us your scooter and we will retrofit everything, according to your wishes. Since this means a relatively large effort for our production team, we recommend that you order your Kumpan, already fitted with an electric top case.
Questions regarding maintenance and repair
-
If your Kumpan electric scooter is in need of repair or maintenance, please look for your local Kumpan dealer or service partner on our website in the section, ‘Dealer Search’. When selecting a partner, please note the categorisation into dealers and/or service partners. You can also contact us and we will find the right partner in your region!
-
The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) represents the chassis number and can be found on the display in the general system settings, under the item, ‘System Info’. It’s also placed on the rear right side, under the side panel of the vehicle.
-
Minor software updates are possible through the telemetry module in the battery. Please contact our customer support team. Larger updates can only be installed on your Kumpan Electric Scooter at our headquarters or at our dealers; this is mostly done during an inspection.
-
If you need spare parts for your scooter, a service partner near you will be happy to help you. If you can’t find a partner in your area, you can of course always contact our After Sales Team.
Even though it is always our aim to have s all spare parts for every scooter model in stock at all times, we would like to point out that our older models (e.g. 1.5 size batteries) may sometimes experience bottlenecks, which may delay shipment. However, we always do our best to get your spare part as soon as possible!
Questions regarding theft
-
To prevent theft, your Kumpan can be secured with a brake disc lock and the handlebar lock. Should a theft nevertheless occur, both the scooter and the individual batteries can be tracked at any time by the built-in telemetry module. In addition, the scooter can be started and stopped remotely using the Kumpan app.
Questions regarding the apps
-
With our ‘Kumpan Key’ app your smartphone becomes the key, replacing the traditional Kumpan key. You can open and start via Bluetooth connection. The unique configuration in the menu is easily accessible, thanks to the step-by-step instructions in the app.
If you have any more questions, please contact us. We are here for you!
